How to tie a bow tie

Although pre-tied bow ties are convenient, nothing can compare to the beauty of a hand-tied bow tie. When it is properly done, I mean, it is really wonderful to look at. A self-tie bow tie is considered the gold standard for fine accessories and can add sophistication to any formal event.
After more than ten years of experience working with my customers I share their insights into the art of tying a perfect bow tie… They say -
«On the subject of tying a bow tie, I realised that it’s exactly the same as tying shoelaces (only around the neck) that made it all so much easier»
«Tip — practise around your knee, then use the same technique to your neck. For some reason, it works»
« The only way to tie a bow tie is to close your eyes and pretend you tie shoelaces, then adjust. Any conscious approach falls flat for me»
Follow these steps to learn how to tie a bow tie. Once you learn it, you can’t unlearn it! It’s like riding a bicycle!
  • Place the bow tie around your neck with one end about an inch longer than the other.
Very important — The bigger is the size of the bow tie neck band, the larger is the size of your bow tie and vice versa.
For your practise I recommend using a bigger size of the bow tie neck band, it will be easier to tie.
When you are more comfortable with tying, reduce the size of the neck band to tie a smaller bow tie.
  • Cross the long end over the short end, make a knot and keep the longer end at the front
  • Fold the short end close to your neck to create the basis of your bow tie.
  • Wrap the long end over the bow and underneath through the space between the layers.
During this step I recommend to keep the knot properly tight. It will hold the bow tie in place and close to your shirt.
  • Tighten the bow by pulling both ends of the tie at the same time.
  • Adjust how the bow tie looks and sits and admire your work!

Don't expect your bow tie to be perfect at this stage.
We talk about the shape and size of your bow tie, not the final look. You don't have to worry if it is not perfect, that is normal.
